Usage of Blockquotes in the article text and citations

Hello, I'm having a dispute with another editor about usage of blockquotes, both within articles, and in citations (references) sections. I asked for a couple of other editors to offer their opinions, but none have. The full discussion is here: Talk:Rent_control_in_the_United_States#Block_quotes.

I would ideally like to know whether some policy exists across all of Wikipedia, if such exists.

1) Is there some policy (other than WP:UNDUE) which specifies when and where blockquotes can be used in an ARTICLE?

2) Is there some policy (other than WP:UNDUE) which specifies when and where blockquotes can be used in the REFERENCES?

Or even SUGGESTIONS as to how they "should" be used.

Thanks!! --Avatar317 (talk) 00:27, 29 August 2018 (UTC)Avatar317

There’s an MOS section at WP:BLOCKQUOTE. The MOS isn’t policy per se but it is general advice. Beeblebrox (talk) 01:00, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

Please help I added file but unsuccessfully (talk) 03:00, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

You formatted it as an external link, I’ve reformatted it as an image link, but it still needs a caption, you can add one by adding a pipe | inside the double brackets and writing whatever seems approrpiate there. Beeblebrox (talk) 03:13, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

Citing proof to substantiate criticism of article about a business enterprise

I am interested in adding some statements to an article that are critical of the business enterprise about which the article is written. These statements are factual, but I can only substantiate the statements with copies of exchanged emails, cell phone texts and oral testimony regarding verbal exchanges. How do I cite such proof that substantiates the critical statements I would like to add to the article, and is such proof sufficient to publish my statements pursuant to Wikipedia's editorial policies? — Preceding unsigned comment added by (talk) 03:43, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

  • Sorry, but no. We require "reliable sources", by our specific definition: see WP:RS. What you describe is what we call "original research" (WP:OR), and it is not considered suitable in an encyclopedia. You should find another venue to publish this information. -Arch dude (talk) 04:26, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

No worries SN. They can be tricky to use in the body of articles. But they're useful when trying to draw a direct comparison between two images, and in cases where a subject is so broad one image won't suffice. See for example how I used them for the lead images on Poverty and Humour. GMGtalk 17:38, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

Question about Wikipedia reuse

29 August 2018 The Wikimedia Foundation, Inc., Dear Sirs/Madam; While searching to write some background about my Ethiopia from the Diaspora for my overdue autobiography book, I came across your detailed background and historical information and data in your website, but it is too much to include it in my autobiography, for the interest of those readers who are not Ethiopians. Hence as your conclusive remark after the detailed Ethiopia’s historical background it reads as follows: Print/export • Create a book • Download as PDF • Printable version This page was last edited on 28 August 2018, at 15:53 (UTC). And, therefore, am asking permission to print it as a book, as it is a total of about 73 pages, of A4 paper, and I wish to get such authorization letter if you please do not mind, mentioning my print as originated from your write-ups and authorization. However, the photo with the captions of Former Prime Minister of Ethiopia Hailemariam Desalegn meeting with former US Deputy Secretary of Defense Ash Carter in Addis Ababa, and Former Foreign Minister of Ethiopia Tedros Adhanom with former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, as well as the Languages and Religions colour signs, refused to be copied while all other photos and sketches did. Thanking you in advance, I hope and pray to get your favourable response at your earliest convenience, please? Sincerely

  • We will not answer your query by mail, email, snapchat or whatever, but only on Wikipedia.
For authorization to reuse Wikipedia content, please see WP:COPYRIGHT, in particular the big red box: it is pointless for a formal letter since no single editor nor the Wikimedia Foundation (the legal entity who runs the site) has the authority to write that. Nonetheless, any text on Wikipedia is reusable provided you follow the CC-BY-SA license term, mostly attribution (saying where you took the content from and under which license). For images, you will need to check each image page individually, as some may not be freely reusable. If you click on the Adhanom/Kerry image, for instance, it takes you to File:Secretary_Kerry_and_Ethiopian_Foreign_Minister_Adhanom_Hold_a_News_Conference_in_Addis_Ababa_(3).jpg, where you can see that the licensing allows reuse (in fact, it is released in public domain as a work of US government, so even providing attribution is not mandatory). Query to users of AWB or scripts

Thought I might get a quicker response here than posting to say Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser. As I don't use scripts or tools like AWB, I was wondering if there is a function in either AWB or another script to modify basic HTML formatting in references e.g. <templatestyles src="Talk quote inline/styles.css" /><ref>Author, Name. [ Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia]. Wikipedia. Retrieved August 29, 2018.</ref> to Template:Cite web or another template format, to unify an article's citation style per WP:CITEVAR. Thanks. Ss112 12:30, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

Ss112, not everyone here at the Help Desk uses AWB or scripts. Though it is a more general audience, so I can see why you would post here.
For AWB, the best place to ask would be at Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Tasks where the AWB users can tell you if it's possible. Or it might already be done by someone who hasn't gotten to the article that you're concerned with. †dismas†|(talk) 14:02, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

Content Reversion

Our firm, Troutman Sanders LLP, has recently tried to update our Wikipedia content based on new firm data, only to have our revisions converted twice now. The reason provided is that we use too much PR or Marketing speak. We feel we have provided adequate reference through multiple citations and have used concise, factual language. Can someone assist us in allowing our edits?

Thank you so much! — Preceding unsigned comment added by (talk) 15:52, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

First, any editor representing your firm must review and comply with the conflict of interest policy and the paid editing policy. The latter is mandatory for paid editors/company representatives. As you (or other editor from your firm) have a conflict of interest, you should not edit the article about your firm directly; instead, you should make edit requests on the article talk page detailing what changes you feel should be made. 331dot (talk) 15:59, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
I would add that language like "With a diverse practice mix, workforce and footprint that includes 12 offices spanning the United States, Troutman Sanders has cultivated its reputation for a higher commitment to client care for over 120 years" is pure marketing-speak and will never be accepted. Some of the other stuff may or may not be, but you should not add it directly. 331dot (talk) 16:01, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

help with links

What is that?
Missing or empty |title= (talk) 17:26, 29 August 2018 (UTC) It probably means a page used a citation template where a mandatory title parameter was not given. We can say more if you say where you saw it. Always give the name of a page you have an issue with. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:34, 29 August 2018 (UTC)
I watch article Jana Beller, and see that in References. (talk) 17:37, 29 August 2018 (UTC) There is a "help" link you can click. The first example on Jana Beller has a reference saying {{cite web|url= |accessdate=May 23, 2012 |deadurl=yes |archiveurl= |archivedate=July 19, 2012 }}. The archive link shows a page with title "Jana Beller" so the solution is to add |title=Jana Beller to the citation code. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:45, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

Article history dragged along

I created an article (Upfield (company)) by writing it on a user page and moving it to article space, forgetting that all of the history of that user page would get dragged along. Since I have used that page for editing of lots of article, it could be confusing anyone who happens to look at Upfield (company)'s history. Should I ignore it or request for it to be deleted. The article has been converted to a redirect, so it would be easy to re-do it. Leschnei (talk) 19:11, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

The article was incorrectly redirected to Unilever, and I restored it and did some cleanup, but don't have the ability to remove the extra history. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 22:15, 29 August 2018 (UTC)

How to create/translate an official wikipedia page from an other language?

What are the advantages of creating an account?

For the last two weeks or so, I have been editing Wikipedia from my IP address. I am considering making an account, but I don't want to enter my email. Could you please let me know what advantages of having an account are? Thank you. (talk) 00:33, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

See Wikipedia:Why create an account? It's optional to give an email address but if you don't then you lose access to the account if you forget the password. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:37, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
Is it not true that you can recover from a lost password if you use Template:Committed identity, even of you don't reveal your email address?
<templatestyles src="Template:Committed identity/styles.css"/>
Committed identity: c0c5e71bca550e99a8ae6641e66c428e232051bade39cd47355634ff159c9475fffa1d12eee339aa401bfe5b31ff7fc352c2b9c6f002bfe82d03a6b3f9e40047 is a SHA-512 commitment to this user's real-life identity.
BTW, for 12 years Wikipedia has had an email address for me that nobody else knows about, and they have never spammed me, sold the email address, or used it in any way unless I have opted in for a particular use (such as turning on the "email this user" feature, which sends me an email but doesn't reveal my email address to the person emailing me). --Guy Macon (talk) 01:09, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
You can ask for a developer to set an email address for your account so a new password can be mailed but they only consider it in special cases like users with advanced rights or large edit counts. They require evidence the request is from the real user. Template:Committed identity can help with that but it's more intended for cases where a hacker has taken over your account. For forgotten passwords, an email address is the way to go. Comparison of webmail providers shows many services where you can create a free account if you don't want to give your main address. No, it does not make sense at all. Even though colonel John Bullock was born before the painting of the Faulkbourne Hall was made, the Hall itself is much older than him, and it is mentioned earlier in the article than him. It is reasonable to have illustrations along the text where the depicted object or person is mentioned, not in the order of images' creation. --CiaPan (talk) 08:48, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

Hello everyone, I'm from ckbwiki. I copied {{In the news}} template content, then paste here. But the image was very big (I made it to be a comment now) and Main page has some problem now. Please who can fix it? ئارام بکر (talk) 09:05, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

The problem is ckb:Template:ifempty but I don't know why it's broken. It's supposed to use ckb:Module:If empty to return the first non-empty parameter. At the English Wikipedia, a{{ifempty|100}}b{{#invoke:If empty|main|100}}c correctly produces a100b100c. At ckb it produces ab100c. This means that calling the module directly works but calling it via the template fails. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:48, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

@Genghis khan2846: You have clearly stated that you think there should be a new article on Wikipedia, on the History of Mongol Shamanism. However, you do not seem to understand how Wikipedia works, so here is a simple explanation. All 100,000 or so of the currently active editors are volunteers, and nobody directs any of us to create a new article. If you want this article to come into existence, then you are free to write the article yourself (see WP:YFA for guidance). Alternatively, you can request that such an article be created, but such a request will result in an article only if some particular volunteer becomes interested in the subject. There is no mechanism for anyone to direct any one of the active editors to do this task. -Arch dude (talk) 19:09, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

Add a name to a page

I need to add Veryle Rupp to this page. He’s a 1978 Webber Douglas graduate. IMDb has him listed and Webber Douglas FB — Preceding unsigned comment added by Verylerupp (talkcontribs) 16:12, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

I'm sorry, Verylerupp, but no, you do not "need" to add anybody to anything in Wikipedia. Promotion of any sort is strictly forbidden in Wikipedia, and any attempt to use it for somebody's publicity or on-line presence tends to be strongly resisted. If you meet Wikipedia's criteria for being notable (which is not about importance, or fame, or popularity, or influence, but simply about whether there is enough independent reliable-published material to base an article on) then we can have an article about you, and your name can be added to appropriate lists. But you should on no account try to create such an article yourself - see autobiography for why not - and if it is created, you will have no control over its contents. Please read some of the links that somebody has thoughtfully put on your user talk page. --ColinFine (talk) 17:12, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
@Verylerupp: In addition, names are not added to the category as you did at Category:Alumni of the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. If an article can be supported as outlined above, then the article is placed into the category by adding the latter to the appropriate section. Eagleash (talk) 17:20, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

James Averdieck

Hello I am editing my wikipedia page - James Averdieck - to update my personal status. I am no longer married to Annie and want to update to state my fiancé is Charlotte. I have done this twice now and it changes for a few hours then reverts back to the old content. How can you help me make sure my edits change permanently please?

@Javerdieck 1165: Please review the policy on autobiographical articles; it is strongly advised that you not edit about yourself, instead you may make edit requests on article talk pages for any changes you feel are needed.
With regard to the specific change, the information about your personal status is not in the source currently provided in the article. Unfortunately, we cannot simply take your word for it that things have changed, as we have no way of knowing you are who you say you are at this time. (I would suggest that you confirm your identity with Wikipedia by emailing the address listed in the paragraph this link takes you to.) Even if we did, we would need a documented source for the information. Is the change in your personal status in a source similar to the source the article had for your prior status? 331dot (talk) 20:18, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
I have removed the disputed section because there are no current, independent, reliable sources available for verification. Vexations (talk) 22:19, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
@Vexations:, the 2006 Daily Telegraph article abut James Averdieck refers to "James and Annie Averdieck" and the photo of them and two children is captioned "James and Annie Averdieck with their family", and the article itself includes some details about the children. The 2010 Evening Standard article states "James Averdieck, 44, lives with his wife and two children in south-west London." Both The Daily Telegraph and the Evening Standard are reliable sources.
Rather than the now deleted "He is married to Annie, they have two children, and live in south-west London", how about we replace that with "As of 2010, Averdieck was married to Annie, they had two children, and lived in south-west London." We should also re-add "Children: 2" to the infobox, and for now at least leave out "Spouse(s): Annie". Edwardx (talk) 17:08, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
I'll respond on the talk page. Vexations (talk) 17:30, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Couple of questions over

I was just wandering how long does it take on average for a page to be published also is there any way to check on that process?

Many thanks

@Olip97: I assume this refers to Draft:Danny Ligairi. You have not submitted it for review- and you should not do so until your draft has references from independent reliable sources. Submitting it now would only lead to it being declined. Once submitted, reviews are conducted by volunteers like yourself, and it usually takes some time, many weeks, if not a couple months. 331dot (talk) 20:23, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

Editor disputes on Talk:South African farm attacks

Hello, I'm coming to ask for some advice/assistance after seeing a Wikipedia:Teahouse question that could use some answers from anyone here. There's been ongoing discussion between editors on Talk:South African farm attacks, and the article subject is very controversial and disputed especially now. I'm not involved in the discussions at all, but it is an ongoing and extremely charged debate, per discussions at Talk:South African farm attacks# A dispute and Talk:South African farm attacks#Is the Wikipedia article, South African Farm Attacks, devolving into an activist editor political racewar?, and I'd like to see things be more under control if admins step in and lock the page or whatever is most appropriate. If I can redirect my question anywhere else, please let me know, thanks! Rosalina2427 (talk to me) 21:28, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

You could consider leaving a note at WP:AN (if you've never left a note at AN before, follow the instructions at the top of that page very carefully). Lourdes 01:10, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Help with an edit that keeps being deleted after I submit it

I have been trying to add the name of my Supernatural Impala replica car to the page that defines "Darkness" because the name of the car is "The Darkness". I submitted a link to her facebook page and two other website sources that list her name. I don't understand why it keeps being deleted. Wikipedia accepted the name of another Supernatural Impala replica car named "Venator" under the term Venator. I don't see a difference in what I'm submitting. I would be most grateful for any assistance you can provide. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Redgal65 (talkcontribs) 21:42, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

I suggest that you have a look at the answer given to the same question you asked yesterday under Don't understand why you keep deleting the definition I am submitting. Chaheel Riens (talk) 21:59, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
(edit conflict)@Redgal65: It seems you'd already posted this question yesterday at Wikipedia:Help desk#Don't understand why you keep deleting the definition I am submitting and it was appropriately answered there. The edit in Venator was removed as well. Per David Biddulph, you may take a look at MOS:DABENTRY. Rosalina2427 (talk to me) 22:01, 30 August 2018 (UTC)
(edit conflict)Redgal65 Hello. You seem to have misunderstood the purpose of a disambiguation page. Those pages are used to point people in the right direction when they search for a term for which more than one article could be what they are looking for (e.g. if someone searches for John Smith, which of the many historically notable John Smiths are they looking for?). Unfortunately, there is no article about your car, therefore your car should not be listed on a disambiguation page. As for Venator, it seems it was overlooked when someone added the car to that page on August 8, but the situation has now been rectified and it is no longer listed there.
You did indeed leave an edit summary including the facebook page and couple other links, but they do not appear to meet the threashold of notability required for a topic to have a Wikipedia article. In short, your car should not be listed on the disambiguation page unless it has an article, and it should not have an article unless multiple reliable sources have written articles specifically about your car. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 22:03, 30 August 2018 (UTC)

languages that I want to use

I see too many languages at wiki. I want to restrict them to the following 6: German, Russian, Spanish, French, Italian and Portuguese. How to eliminate the unwanted languages?

Norm — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mikalac (talkcontribs) 00:03, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Wikipedia comes in different language editions and the community aims to include any and all languages as long as there are editors willing to build the editions in different languages. Please see Wikipedia:Multilingual coordination. Rosalina2427 (talk to me) 00:06, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
@Mikalac: I guess you refer to which languages are shown under "Languages" in the left pane. The bottom of Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering has the option "Use a compact language list, with languages relevant to you." PrimeHunter (talk) 00:23, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

How do I restore full pop-ups when hovering over links, today it only is giving me the link-label. (talk) 05:54, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

As an IP editor, you probably meant Page Previews than popups. Read Page Previews#Enable/Disable to understand how to get the same activated. By any chance if you mean how to enable popups (a facility provided to logged in users), you can read the instructions at Wikipedia:Tools/Navigation popups#Automatic installation. Telaga is a Community of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, concentrated primarily in the Coastal Areas of Andhra. The Telagas are Agriculturists by Profession and have been Fuedal landlords. Telaga is a Branch or a Division of the Kapu, or Naidu Community of Andhra. They have the caste title Naidu, Dora. They are classified as Forward Caste or OC category.

Origins The Origin of the Telagas can be traced back to the Western Chalukyan Expansion into Andhra region which happened in the 6th century A.D. Telagas are the most ancient Warrior/Agricultural clans of the Deccan and South India who are specialised in warfare.

The term Telaga was a derivation of the word Telingana.Andhra was referred to as Telingana in the ancient texts as it was the area that had three major Shivinsa-Aramas, thus was called Tri-Linga', and the people living there were called Telugus and the language spoken by the people there was called Telugu.

The Telagas have served as Nayakulu (Governors),commanders and vassals of the Western Chalukya rulers under Pulakesin. These commanders were also called Telugu Nayakulu from which the community name might also might have been derived Telaga.

They formed the bulwark of Ancient armies of the Deccan and South India like Cholas,Pallavas,Chalukyas,Kakatiyas etc. They seem to have a connection with the Eastern Chalukyas.

The Vassals of Chalukyas entered into Matrimonial Alliances and ultimately established the Chalukya- Chola Dynasity. Etukuri Balaramamurthy and Colin McKenzie in fact mentione that these Telagas or Kapu communnity are the Descendants of these were these Telugu Cholas.

Telugu Cholas The Telugu Cholas rules for over Four Centuries the various regions of Andhra.

Important ruling Clans were

Velanati Choluluof Palnadu War who supported Bramha Naidu in his war against the Nalagam Raju.

Renati Cholas

Konidena Cholas

Nannuru Cholas

Nellore Chola Kings

After the fall of the Easten Chalukyan kingdoms and the Velanati Cholas. The Telagas had to serve under the Kakateeyas as Vassals and accept their Suzzienarity.Under the new rulers they were given the title Nayaka/Nayakudu and played a major role in shaping the history of modern Andhra.

After the fall of the Kakateeyas the Telagas under Kaapaya Nayaka and Prolaya Nayaka led the battle against the invading Bahamanis by combining forces with the Reddy,Velama and Balija Nayaks and liberated the Andhra Country from Tyrranny nd Destruction.

Telagas had matrimonial Alliances with the Kakateeya and Vijayanagar Rulers.Araveeti Rama Raya the son in law of Krishna Devaraya and the ruler of the last Dynasity of Viajayanagar was a Tealaga. This family was a Eastern Chalukyan Fuedataory called the Arayeti Family which became Araveeti in due cource of time.

With Vijayanagara coming into power the Telagas served under the new rulers and were Dispatched off to Protect the farflung regions of the empire to Tamil Nadu and were posted as Nayaks and took up Administration as Nayaks/Nayakers. The most famous Telaga General was Viswanatha Nayaka who started the Madurai Nayak Dynasit. -- Source Penugonda Charitra..

After the fall of the Vijayanagar Empire in the Battle of Talikota large sections of Telagas migrated towards the North and settled down in their Native Country the Godavari deltas and took to agriculture. And some of them went further South and settled down in the Tanjavur region and joined the Tanjavur Nayaks Army.

Telagas are known for their bravery and fearlessness aptly put by a famous Telrugu Saying describing the community "Teginche vade Telaga" which means "One who dares is a Telaga".Even now we can find swords, armours and weapons with some of the Telaga families in Rajamundry. All of these people are Vaishnavas and have Sri Venugopala Swami has their family deity.

Another Legendary Instance of Telaga Bravery was exhibited during the Bobbili War fought between the Velama Kingdom and the Vizianagaram kingdom led by Vijayaram raju. When all seemed lost for the Bobbilli Ranga Rayudu the Bobbili King before riding out to war in no mood to submit the honour and the Dignity of the Royal House Ordered all of his commanders to Execute their Families before riding out to meet their fate. Accordingly the Telaga and Velama Commanders and Soldiers Executed their families before proceeding out to war. Viajayaramaraju was laid to rest by a valiant Telaga Commander Miriyala Venkata Rao along with Papa Rayudu. -- Bobbili Charitra

Legend Pulakesin II’s brother, Kubja Vishnu Vardhana, founded the Eastern Chalukya Empire after he was appointed Viceroy of Vengi and gave many of his trusted generals fiefdoms to rule over as his vassals and took up reign as Telaga Nayakulu (Governors). Most of the Telagas are fuedal landlords concentrated mainly in the coastal areas of Andhra.

Automatic row numbering?

Is there an existing template or otherwise that allows wikitable rows to be automatically numbered in wiki, such as to automate the process in articles like Cardinal electors for the papal conclave, 2013? This is to resolve the issue of manually attaching numbers to each row and then necessitating tedious changes if rows have to be removed or re-ordered. Thanks. What is difference between Teahouse and Help desk?

What is difference between Wikipedia:Teahouse and Wikipedia:Help_desk? Shushugah (talk) 15:06, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

They have an overlapping scope, but very generally, the Teahouse is geared somewhat more toward very new users specifically, while the help desk is a more general purpose forum, where you will more often see very experienced editors asking questions, and more questions of a highly technical nature than you will normally see at the Teahouse. What GMG said...apart from the fact that at a Teahouse, you normally get tea and chit chat away on getting to know the place; while at the Help desk, you get something akin to end user support... Lourdes 01:52, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Condensing multiple citations

As I understand it, refs cannot be nested inside other refs, so what solutions are there for a situation where a statement has 5+ citations, and it is getting cluttered, but the citations are also named references, so they simply use something like <ref name='Recipe'/>. I am trying to address a real use case in Edward Snowden page where even trimming down citations, it's still hard to read when not merged.

So while this example below is possible, the one after produces an error.

Hey Shushugah. As far as I know, if you are using multiple references, you will have to repeat named refs with each bullet point. For example:

Johnny told the devil "you son of a gun, I'm the best there's ever been."<ref name="daniels">The Devil went down to Georgia. (1979) Charlie Daniels. ''Epic Records''.</ref> They engaged in a fiddle playing contest which Johnny won.<ref name="daniels"/> The story was later told in a popular song by Charlie Daniels.<ref>* The Devil went down to Georgia. JOE (R&B Singer)

In JOE's bio on wikipedia, it states that he moved to New Jersey and became acquainted with Producer, Vincent Herbert which resulted in a record deal with Polygram Records. This patently false. Vincent Herbert had nothing to do with JOE getting a record deal with Polygram. JOE was managed by me (Tselane Williams) and my sister Michele Williams through our company Big Arm Management. I have the actual management agreement. I secured and negotiated his record deal with Mercury/Polygram. He was signed by Dave McPherson. After 2 years and the release of his critically acclaimed Gold debut album, I secured a release for JOE from his record deal with MErcury records and found a new deal for him with Jive Records. That deal resulted in a new album and the release of several chart topping hits including "Don't Want To Be a Player" (co-written by Michele Williams), "I Wanna Know" and "Stutter." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ninelivesent (talkcontribs) 18:05, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

This forum is not for content dispute, rather technical questions of HOW to use wikipedia. That said, I see the claim on that page his no citation. Do you have citation? Original research, like contract sheets do not qualify since that is WP:OR. Imho, that section should be removed entirely, since it's unsubstantiated. Shushugah (talk) 18:14, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
(edit conflict)Ninelivesent Are you aware of published sources that better describe the chain of events? I see the section of Joe (singer) that describes his early career is insufficiently referenced, and that goes against best practices in Wikipedia. Since this is a biography of a living person it's important to us that we get things right, and part of that is ensuring that controversial information is properly referenced. I have added a citation needed tag to the sentence in question. If you can point me at sources to verify your claim I'll gladly change it, but we cannot simply take your word for it. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 18:16, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

  • @WBTPR1:when reading WP:Your first article, please note (really, I mean pay careful attention to this) that the first step is fundamental: If your subject is not notable, by our definition, not yours, then it should not have an article on Wikipedia, no matter how well-written the article is. If you somehow manage to force an article on a non-notable subject onto Wikipedia, it will be deleted. If your subject is notable, then in theory even a poorly written article will be retained so that it can be improved later, but of course we really prefer to start with a well-written article. -Arch dude (talk) 18:57, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

You're the same person who complains about US Sports articles for miles in the future not being done, right? Contribute yourself rather than just calling others lazy. It's the encyclopedia that anyone can edit. Joseph2302 (talk) 22:53, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
There is no hurry for this - or any other of your impolite requests. This IP has stated in the past that they do not wish to create an account. There is nothing wrong with that. OTOH their request can be ignored or even removed if the ad hominum attacks continue. MarnetteD|Talk 23:00, 31 August 2018 (UTC)

Wut?! Lazy butts? You must be referring to my dearest EEng, who is giving the HD a stepmotherly/fatherly treatment, despite such exciting messages being posted here. Lourdes 01:47, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
I honestly have no idea what anyone here is talking about. EEng 02:37, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Uncited material added again after reversion

On August 25, I reverted an edit to Gloria Blondell because the statements about her parentage had no citation. At that time, I posted a comment on the talk page to explain the reason for reversion. No one has replied to the talk-page post, but today someone added the same information (again with no citation). Should the latest change remain with no verification? I don't want to get into an edit war. Eddie Blick (talk) 00:26, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

missing links

you'r articals tell about a subject, but have no contact information. i was reading about forestry information for land owners, when i clicked on native tribes, it took me to a page about the history of native Americans but nothing about land owners. i expected to go to a page about help programs for natives, after all i was looking at a forestry resource assistance program page that had the link. and there is no link to any agency or person to contact to apply for assistance or help from. so from my point of view, your information is incomplete and worthless, it is information, yes. but useless information. — Preceding unsigned comment added by (talk) 05:24, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Hello. Providing names of individuals as contact persons in our articles sometimes goes against our privacy policy and/or anti-promotional policy. I can understand that yes, agency links can be provided in certain pages detailing forestry resource assistance programs. As every US State has a discrete program, would you be able to mention which article were you specifically referring to? Warmly, Lourdes 05:47, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Someone is messing with Wikipedia pages

Editor49 is messing with Wikipedia pages and writing misleading information about some people.

Please do recheck Benedict Cumberbatch's Wikipedia page as it has extremely misleading information about him.

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Editor14000605 (talkcontribs) 05:48, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Handled by Eagleash, who has left them a warning (given their long history of unconstructive edits, I would perhaps suggest an immediate block at the relevant desk). Lourdes 05:58, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
(edit conflict) @Editor14000605: The disruption has been reverted and the editor warned. They are trying to blame a younger sibling. In most cases you would be free to undo the edits yourself but this particular page has been protected so only autoconfirmed accounts can edit it. Approval of

Dear All,

Please help me in finding out the problem with the page.

I need to get it approved. It has been lying as a draft for a long time now.

Ankit — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ankitnigam1986 (talkcontribs) 05:50, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Why do you "need to get it approved"? Are you connected with the university? The draft reads like an advert. You need to modify the text to an encyclopaedic style. Also add the "Reflist" template at the bottom, and remove your bolding of headings. Dbfirs 06:01, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

@Ankitnigam1986: The page is not currently submitted for review. If you wish it to be so add {{subst:submit}} to the top of the page. This will place it at Afc where there is a possible 8 week wait for review. As implied by Dbfirs, you can as WP:AUTOCONFIRMED move it to mainspace yourself. I have fixed some of the formatting / layout issues but the points raised by Dbfirs should also be addressed before submittinmg or moving. Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 06:18, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

@Ankitnigam1986: PS, you cannot use Wikipedia as a reference. Please see WP:UGC. Eagleash (talk) 06:33, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
Also a lot of it is just copied from their website. Which is a copyvio and also just an advert. Joseph2302 (talk) 07:14, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Nomination of an article for deletion

I have tried to nominate an article for deletion, but things did not seem to work out. This was the article on Caroline Nicholls. I tried to follow the instructions at Wikipedia: Articles for deletion and got the tag saying "This article is being considered for deletion - please share your thoughts on this article's entry" heading the page, but at the list of entries on Wikipedia: Articles for deletion, this does not appear to be there. Can you please explain to me what I have done wrong? Many thanks in advance for your help. Vorbee (talk) 07:37, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

@Vorbee: You made several errors. Next time, try using the "Preloaded debate" link on the article to create the deletion page. Also do step III at WP:AFDHOWTO. I have done it this time.[3] PrimeHunter (talk) 10:06, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

How do I identify contributions that have been undone by someone?

How do I do this?

I received this message

"Hello, I'm Geunineart. I wanted to let you know that one or more of your recent contributions to Philip MacDonald have been undone because they did not appear constructive. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. If you have any questions, you can ask for assistance at the Help Desk. Thanks. Genuine Art 14:28, 30 July 2018 (UTC)"

I am surprised Genuineart knows more than me and am interested to know what he has undone — Preceding unsigned comment added by (talk) 10:30, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

(edit conflict) You can see the page history here and the specific edit by @GenuineArt: (pinging GA out of courtesy) is here. If you wish to discuss it with the other editor please raise at the article talk page or their own talk page. Or hopefully GA will comment in this thread. Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~). Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 10:53, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
Tony, you wrote in a previous message on this Help desk that you are Philip's biographer. I should recommend you immediately read our conflict of interest guidelines and most importantly our paid-contribution disclosure policy and adhere to the requirements of these before editing any further. Thanks, Lourdes 10:59, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Hello again, Both of these templates ({{Back to contents}} & {{Skip to talk}}) have same result, but {{Skip to talk}} do not take you to anywhere that associated to talking! "talk" and "toc" are two defferent words. ئارام بکر (talk) 10:50, 1 September 2018 (UTC)

Hello ئارام بکر, the template is a misnamed template. It should have been named {{Skip to Table of Contents}} or {{Skip to toc}} (short form for "table of contents"). Sorry for that. If there's anything else you need assistance in, do tell. Lourdes 11:02, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
No Lourdes, thank you so much. Just move the template to the correct name. Thank you again! ئارام بکر (talk) 11:41, 1 September 2018 (UTC)
